In 2008, Final Fantasy enthusiasts in Japan were treated to a special commemoration of the series's 20th Anniversary with the release of the Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary Ultimania trilogy. These books, crafted by Studio BentStuff and published by Square Enix, provide an in-depth look into the mainline Final Fantasy games.
The trilogy is divided into three volumes, often referred to as "Files", each focusing on different aspects: Character, Scenario, and Battle. These books cover the main series from Final Fantasy all the way through to Final Fantasy XII, including Final Fantasy X-2. It's worth noting that while there are other books available, these Ultimania volumes are unique in their comprehensive coverage of the scenario and gameplay of the first six titles.
Each book dedicates around fifty pages to dissecting every game, though earlier titles receive slightly fewer pages. Between chapters, readers will find "Ultimania Check" features, which delve deeper into the book's main themes across the games. Additionally, at the end of each book, an interview with relevant creators provides further insight into the development process.
