Final Fantasy III 35th Anniversary: Commemorative Artwork and Rare Development Assets Shared

Square Enix is celebrating the 35th anniversary of Final Fantasy III, originally released in Japan on April 27, 1990. In honor of this milestone, Square Enix has shared a new commemorative illustration created by Kaori Nishio and revealed a selection of development materials from the game's original production.

Final Fantasy III holds a unique place in the franchise's history as the final title programmed by Nasir Gebelli. During the development of the original game, Gebelli’s visa expired, prompting his return to California, where parts of the development team followed him to complete the project.

Originally intended for localization in 1990, Final Fantasy III was not released outside Japan until the Nintendo DS 3D remake in 2006. This version later received ports to PC and mobile devices.

The revealed materials include monster illustrations by the development staff, a map image of the village of Ur, and field sprites intended for map design. These materials offer a rare look into the early creative process behind Final Fantasy III.

To mark the anniversary, Square Enix has announced sales for Final Fantasy III titles. The 3D Remake is available at a 50% discount for iPhone, iPad, and Android until May 7. Additionally, the Pixel Remaster version, featuring updated 2D pixel graphics and quality-of-life improvements, is available at a 30% discount on iOS, Android, and Amazon platforms during the same period.
