Japanese game company HIKE conducted a survey in 2024, asking 1,000 players from various age groups about their gaming habits and the titles they enjoyed the most throughout the year. The results highlighted a strong preference for long-established domestic franchises, with Final Fantasy ranking as the most enjoyed game series.
Final Fantasy secured the top spot with 56 votes, ahead of The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario, which both received 55 votes. While the survey did not specify which titles were most responsible for Final Fantasy’s ranking, the latest releases, Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, likely played a major role.
Survey Results:
Rank | Game Series | Votes |
1 | Final Fantasy | 56 |
2~3 | The Legend of Zelda / Super Mario | 55 |
4 | Dragon Quest | 45 |
5 | Pokémon | 29 |
6~8 | Splatoon / Elden Ring / Like a Dragon | 22 |
9 | Momotaro Dentetsu | 18 |
10 | Animal Crossing | 17 |
11~12 | Persona / Resident Evil | 16 |
13 | Monster Hunter | 15 |
14~15 | Street Fighter / Unicorn Overlord | 12 |
16~17 | Armored Core / Powerful Pro Baseball | 11 |
18 | Shiren the Wanderer | 10 |
19~22 | NieR / Genshin Impact / Fortnite / Suika Game | 8 |
Participants were categorized into three groups based on their spending habits: light users, medium users, and core users. Around 50% of light users preferred to focus on one game at a time, while medium and core users played multiple titles throughout the year. Respondents expressed a high level of satisfaction with their gaming experiences, with 70% to 90% of the games they played meeting their expectations.
While the sample size of 1,000 participants is relatively small for making broad generalizations about all Japanese gamers, it still provides insight into the preferences of those surveyed.
