Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Next Game Aims to Follow Final Fantasy VI's Legacy

Writer: ⚡Xe⚡⚡Xe⚡

Hironobu Sakaguchi, in an interview with The Verge, has shared insights into his latest work and what lies ahead in his illustrious career. Originally released on Apple Arcade in 2021, Fantasian was meant to be his final project before retirement. In December 2024, the game received an updated version, Fantasian Neo Dimension, which includes new features such as voice acting. This definitive edition was published by Square Enix, the company where Sakaguchi began his career.

Reflecting on this collaboration, Sakaguchi remarked:

"It’s the place where I started my career, so coming full circle through the game I envisioned to be my final work was definitely a fascinating experience. There are times in life when we encounter coincidental full-circle moments or experience deja vu, but this particular instance felt very significant and comforting."

Sakaguchi described Fantasian Neo Dimension as a complete, director’s cut version of the game. He also saw it as a symbolic farewell to his time in game development.

"With the production and release of Fantasian Neo Dimension — a definitive director’s cut version — I believe that the game has become complete. In the distant future, or maybe after I have already left this world, I imagine this game will find its meaning if someone chooses to look into the legacy of either myself or Final Fantasy."

Despite initially planning for Fantasian to be his last project, Sakaguchi is now working on a new game with the same team. The project aims to be a successor to Final Fantasy VI, blending classic elements with modern innovations.

"I’m currently working on a new project with the same team that worked on Fantasian Neo Dimension. It’s generally going to follow a similar style to my previous works, and it’ll be something that can be a successor to Final Fantasy VI in a good way — our goal is to create something old but new at the same time. It’ll be part two of my farewell note."

With Sakaguchi returning to his creative roots, his next project promises to resonate with fans of classic RPGs.
