Masaaki Hayasaka Discusses Final Fantasy VI and HD-2D Remakes

Writer: ⚡Xe⚡⚡Xe⚡

Masaaki Hayasaka, producer of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, has expressed his personal interest in seeing Final Fantasy VI remade in the HD-2D style. In an interview with Inverse, Hayasaka shared how Square Enix’s HD-2D art style, first introduced in Octopath Traveler, was inspired by the high-quality pixel art of Final Fantasy VI.

“Octopath Traveler—the first HD-2D title—was developed with FFVI in mind, as it had the highest quality pixel art,” Hayasaka explained. He also mentioned that he would love to see how Final Fantasy VI could look with the HD-2D treatment.

However, Hayasaka clarified that there are no current plans for such a remake. He explained that adapting a game to the HD-2D style is a challenging process, requiring significant artistic effort, especially for games with a distinct and well-loved visual identity.

Square Enix’s HD-2D art style, which blends modern visual enhancements with nostalgic pixel art, has been well-received by fans. Its success in reimagining classic titles like Dragon Quest III highlights its potential for bringing older games to life in a fresh way.

While a Final Fantasy VI HD-2D remake has not been confirmed, the idea remains an exciting possibility for fans of the series.
