This year started with an unexpected choice for me! After diving into both Bloodstained games, I was craving more Castlevania adventures. The release of the Dominus Collection couldn’t have come at a better time, so I jumped straight into Order of Ecclesia!
Originally released on the Nintendo DS in 2008, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is now available on modern platforms like PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S as part of the Dominus Collection. This action-adventure RPG delivers a mix of Gothic aesthetics, challenging gameplay, and an engaging story.
Set in the early 19th century after Symphony of the Night, the Belmont Clan is absent, leaving the Order of Ecclesia to face Dracula’s looming threat. Players take on the role of Shanoa, a member of the Order, tasked with recovering the stolen Dominus glyphs while uncovering dark secrets about Dracula’s revival. The story combines themes of sacrifice and determination, all wrapped in Shanoa’s journey to protect humanity.
The standout feature of Order of Ecclesia is the Glyph System, which allows players to equip over 100 magical abilities and weapons. Combat revolves around regenerating Magic Points, encouraging strategy and experimentation. Paired with its dual-handed weapon system, the game offers dynamic and varied gameplay. Exploration includes 20 locations filled with secrets, puzzles, and optional quests from rescued villagers.
I’ll admit, the difficulty caught me off guard! Learning boss attack patterns and restarting battles became routine, but the challenge made victories rewarding. If difficulty isn’t your thing, the rewind feature is a lifesaver, letting you fix mistakes on the go.
Overall, I loved Order of Ecclesia! It’s a challenging, satisfying game, and I’m looking forward to exploring the rest of the Dominus Collection.
