On our journey through all different genres, today i want to talk about a pretty much dead (or dying) genre: Light gun shooters!
A genre well known from the arcades, that was booming in the 90s and also being shown in countless US movies.
The probably most popular home version of light gun games were Duck hunt for the SNES or Virtua Cop for the Sega Saturn.
The primary design element of light gun shooters is to simulate a shooting gallery by having the player aiming and discharging a gun-shaped controller at a screen. These games typically feature "on-rails" movement, which gives the player control only over aiming.
To show you a more modern game from this genre, I choose my favorite light gun series, Time Crisis!
Time Crisis: Razing storm for the PS3 is actually a compilation of three games:
- Razing Storm: A spin-off of the Time Crisis series
- Time Crisis 4: A re-release of the fourth game
- Deadstorm Pirates: A rail shooter game with a typical pirate treasure story
All games are compatible with the Guncon 3 controller, a light gun developed by Namco that is working with LCD and Plasma TVs and not like the previous generations only with CRT TVs.
Alternatively the game can also be played using the move controllers.
The Time Crisis and House of the Dead franchises are the most popular ones that were still releasing new entries in the "recent" times. In the future i see this kind of gameplay moving and completely merging with the VR technology that is already offering many rail shooters with similar gameplay.
