Game for July: Code Vein!
After playing Stranger of Paradise I end up liking the challenging boss fights in this kind of games. But because I don't like the aesthetics of the Souls games, I searched for an alternative. If people calling a game an anime souls-like you definitely got my attention!
Code vein is an action RPG in which you create a custom character and choose between different blood codes that are representing classes known from other games. You can compare it to the jobs from FFXIV that you can also switch at any time. Skills can be inherited by leveling up and unlocked for other blood codes. There are plenty of skills to choose from, but during my play through I only used a handful.
What is also pretty similar to SoP is the companion that is always at your side. All have different skills and are useful in different situations. Another player can take control of the companion and the game can also be played in coop. Unfortunately the progression is not the same for both players making it less motivating for the partner.
The fighting system is similar to SoP and includes a lot of dodging, absorbing of attacks and learning of patterns. Every enemy at every level is trying to ambush you. What I didn't like is how slow parrying in this game is. The enemies attacks are faster than I was able to absorb their attacks. Dodging was the way to go for me.
The graphical style is really anime-ish and the female characters definitely offer some fan service 👀 nothing really surprising from this kind of style. If you are familiar with God Eater you will feel at home as those games even share the same world. I attached also a picture of my own character. Doesn't she look like Mikasa from AoT? 😅
I really enjoyed this game and was glad it didn't overstay its welcome. It's not dragging and every level and boss was still motivating me to keep going till the end. Only the difficulty spike at the end made me curse a lot 😅
