PS4 - Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, developed by Koei Tecmo, is a remaster of the survival horror game originally released in 2014 for the Wii U under the same title, now available on multiple platforms.

Set on Hikami Mountain, the game revolves around three protagonists entangled in supernatural events linked to ancient rituals and the ominous force known as Black Water. Ose Kurosawa, a shrine maiden, plays a pivotal role, and player choices influence distinct character arcs and multiple endings.

Presented in a third-person perspective, players explore haunting environments, using the Camera Obscura as the primary tool for combatting hostile ghosts. The wetness meter introduces complexity, impacting both gameplay dynamics and the well-being of the characters. An exclusive episode features Ayane, and the game offers diverse endings based on player decisions. The focus of the game is on atmospheric horror and "engaging" gameplay.

This is the first Fatal Frame game I played, and because many of my horror-loving friends are fans of the series, I had really high expectations. Unfortunately, the game was, in my opinion, really disappointing. I am a big fan of Japanese horror movies and also know this is just a remaster of an older game, but especially the gameplay was just really tedious. A horror game that is slow, clunky, and not scary, and spawns ghosts that are bullet sponges all the time, gets boring fast. The voice acting of the characters and their actions also made me shake my head all the time. The game is flawed in so many aspects that I was just glad that I finished it. I also own Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, but after finishing Maiden of Black Water, I decided to put it on hold for now.

Are you a fan of the Fatal Frame series?

I would love to hear your opinion!
