I rarely call a game outright bad since I try to find something positive in every title. But this time, it’s really difficult.
What is Inescapable?
Inescapable: No Rules, No Rescue is a social thriller visual novel developed by Dreamloop Games and published by Aksys Games. It was released in 2023 for all major platforms.
The story follows Harrison and 11 other contestants who are forced into a dark web reality show. Stranded on an island with no rules, they must survive for six months to win €500,000. The game is supposed to explore how far people will go for money when normal laws and rules no longer apply.
The gameplay is choice-driven, shaping the story and relationships with a diverse cast. It features full voice acting and an original soundtrack.
The game was marketed as a “death game,” drawing comparisons to Danganronpa and the Zero Escape series. However, it fails to deliver. The pacing is painfully slow, with most of the game spent on long, uninteresting dialogue. When something finally happens, it’s underwhelming. Puzzles and interrogations feel uninspired, and the story often lacks coherence.
One of the biggest issues is the dialogue. Characters frequently use foreign phrases to reflect their different nationalities, but it feels forced and unnatural. No one talks like this in real life!
I pushed myself to finish one ending, only to find out there are four routes in total. Unlocking them requires tedious conditions, and replaying the game was so frustrating that I gave up after an hour of second run.
To make matters worse, the game originally launched at €50, which is a steep price for such a disappointing experience. If you’re looking for a real “death game,” I’d recommend Danganronpa, the Zero Escape series, or Raging Loop instead!
