This game couldn't have a more fitting title. Because it really felt like eternity playing it...
Edge of Eternity is a turnbased JRPG made by the french developer Midgar Studio. (Name inspired by FFVII). The small team of eight people tried to create a game for all fans of the classic FF games.
The endresult is an openworld JRPG with many elements known from other games. If the graphics of ESO, battle system of Divinity and a generic story of Final Fantasy would have a baby, this game would be the result. But in bad 😂
Considering I played it on the PS5 the game looks and performs really bad. The faces of characters have almost no expressions and, how my wife said, all the characters look like they would be sick. The VA of the dialogs is emotionless and made us joke about it all the time.
The story is highly unsatisfing. It tries really hard to be mysterious and epic but fails big time. The storytelling is questionable and towards the end just ridiculous.
The combat system sounds intriguing at first and is fun.. for the first 5 hours or so. It took me around 60 hours to finish the game and it was a torture... The fights are really repetitive and the difficulty is highly unbalanced. If you are inexperienced with this type of games I see you never finishing it. The last fight was just frustrating.
What spoiled my mood the most is the walking! A lot of walking! A loooooooot! There are teleports but for the sake of plot there are parts that are forcing you to walk. Eventhough the Nekaroo, a cat version of Chocobo, is cute, it doesn't make the journey through endless nothingness and repetitive fights enjoyable.
I really tried to like the game, but can't recommend it to anyone. The small team just overdid it and tried to mix and implement too many things but none of them really well. The game is full of bugs and visual errors that caused me headaches. Yes, the game is just 30€ but if you don't have fun it's still too much.
