After a series of gloomy Thursday posts, I decided to add some color with a remastered collection of a popular PlayStation retro platformer that has made its way to all modern game consoles and PC.
The Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series includes remastered versions of Klonoa Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2 Lunatea's Veil, originally released on PlayStation and PlayStation 2, respectively. The remaster of Door to Phantomile is based on its 2008 Wii remake and not the PS1 original. This collection was released on various platforms in July 2022 to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary.
The games are set in the worlds of Phantomile and Lunatea, where Klonoa, the Dream Traveler, must save the world from peril. He uses a ring and Wind Bullets to inflate enemies for various purposes, including double jumping.
The gameplay in Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is straightforward, featuring side-scrolling platformer action with 3D effects. Players navigate intertwining paths and interact with foreground and background elements. The remastered version enhances graphics but removes cel-shading. Players can toggle a pixel filter for visual preferences. The collection maintains the original gameplay with the option for an easier difficulty, a two-player cooperative mode, and enhanced resolution and framerate. While the games aren't lengthy, they provide a polished experience.
