A few weeks ago, I shared a post about the original PS3 release of Lollipop Chainsaw. Recently, I finished playing the remastered version, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, and wanted to share my thoughts.
I was really looking forward to the remaster, as I have fond memories of the original. I bought the game as a reward for passing an exam, which coincidentally fell on the same day as its release. I remember enjoying it because it didn’t take itself too seriously.
After receiving my Japanese physical copy of RePOP, I immediately put Shin Megami Tensei V on hold to dive in. Just three days later, with about two hours of play each day, I finished the story. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to my expectations, and I’m not planning to aim for 100% completion or a higher difficulty replay. In the end, nostalgia wasn't enough to make the game as enjoyable as I had hoped.
It’s not the game’s short length that bothered me; with limited free time, I actually appreciate shorter games these days. My main issue is that, despite being a remaster, it still feels like a game from two generations ago. The gameplay hasn’t aged well, and the flashy multikill animations quickly became repetitive. The humor is funny at first, but the same cringe-worthy lines are repeated far too often. The sound mix is also off, making it hard to get immersed in the game. It’s possible that my tastes have changed, but the experience just didn’t hit the same for me.
I also found it odd that a game with no open world or spectacular visuals had loading times on the PS5. Overall, I can't recommend Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, especially if you didn’t play the original and are used to more modern games.
