While I'm not particularly fond of digital-only releases, some games never see a physical release, mainly because they're just low-budget or simple mini-games, and digital distribution proves to be the most profitable avenue. Crystal Defenders happens to be one of those games. Funnily, it was even one of the first PS3 games I ever bought! 😅
Remember when tower defense games were as popular as Battle Royale games are nowadays? (It's still a thing, right?)
This game combines familiar Final Fantasy elements such as classes, monsters, and summons into a tower defense format.
Set in the world of Ivalice, which fans will recognize from games like FF Tactics, FFXII, or Vagrant Story, Crystal Defenders also incorporates design elements familiar to players of FF Tactics A2.
The game offers three modes:
W1: Introduces basic classes and easier levels to familiarize players with the mechanics.
W2: Expands on game mechanics with the use of crystals, which can power up units within their radius.
W3: Unlocks all mechanics, introducing the toughest enemies in every wave.
In addition to placing units and crystals on the field, players can upgrade them for even more tactical approaches. Some monsters are resistant or even immune to certain types of attacks. The game's objective is clear and "easy": Protect your diamonds from the monsters.
There's also an enhanced version called Crystal Defenders Plus and a sequel named Crystal Defenders: Vanguard Storm, both released for Apple iOS. If you want to play it nowadays, the game is still available on the Microsoft Store for the Xbox360/One/Series.
Have you ever heard of this game or maybe even played it? I just spent a few hours playing non-stop after rediscovering it! 😅
