A leaked pitch presentation for Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages’ Legacy, an animated series based on Final Fantasy IX, has gained traction again on Reddit and social media. While the leak is new to many, it was originally posted 2.5 years ago on Twitter by a user named "thecartoontea," whose account is now deactivated. The resurfaced information has sparked renewed discussions on whether the pitch was real and what its current status might be.

The series, reportedly developed by Cyber Group Studios in collaboration with Square Enix, would have followed six Black Mages, Mel, Koln, Luciola, Thea, Fala, and Doc, who were created from Vivi's life energy. Set around ten years after the events of Final Fantasy IX, the story takes place in Alexandria, where the siblings live peacefully until Koln finds Mel imprisoned in a giant crystal at an inn. In search of a cure, they embark on a journey that leads them beyond their home for the first time.

Cyber Group Studios, the animation company behind the project, was first reported to be working on it in 2021. However, in 2024, the studio filed for bankruptcy, putting the series in an uncertain state. Despite this, there have been acquisition bids from multiple companies interested in its intellectual properties, including Final Fantasy IX.

The resurfacing of the pitch has also reignited speculation about its connection to the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake. However, there is no official confirmation linking the two projects. With the future of Cyber Group Studios still uncertain, the status of Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages’ Legacy remains unclear.
