Many of you surely have great memories related to the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack. My memories of this soundtrack are special for a different reason. Can you spot something weird about this soundtrack without continuing reading?
This soundtrack is not an official Square Enix product but a bootleg. One of the items in my collection that will always remind me to not make the same mistake twice.
When I started buying merchandise for my collection, obviously I went on a search for something from FFVII. I checked out Ebay and, judging by the price of around 50€, bought what I thought was a licensed product. I never meant to unpack it so after its arrival I was only annoyed that one of the discs inside was loose. Was still happy to have it in my, at this time, tiny Final Fantasy collection.
Sometimes later, I inspected it more closely and compared it to different versions of this soundtrack. There is the original published by Digicube and a reissue released by Square Enix few years later.
And here is what is wrong with this soundtrack: While a lot looks like the original, the spine shows a weird meaningless number FF-14~17 instead of official SE code SSCX-10004. Also the EAN code leads to no useful results. There is no mentioning of Square Enix anywhere but instead a weird email address lol
Also a FFVIII OST bootleg exists that has all the same issues.
As a collector, this soundtrack is obviously worthless, but I kept it as a reminder to always check certain things before buying any licensed product.
Are you also being highly skeptical when buying stuff on eBay and Co?
