My first game that I finished in 2024! This isn't even really my game. My wife bought it for herself after reading many good things about it, but after struggling with the difficulty, she more or less "forced" me to play it for her so she could watch. Who needs streamers and let's plays when you can force your own husband 😂
Death's Door is an action-adventure which takes players on a interesting journey through a unique interpretation of afterlife. Released on various platforms, this game introduces players to a small crow reaper navigating a bureaucratic underworld, uncovering a conspiracy.
Gameplay-wise, Death's Door delivers a 3D, isometric action-adventure experience with a variety of weapons and magic at your disposal. Armed with a sword and bow, the protagonist explores interconnected areas through doors, taking down bosses to collect Giant Souls. The game keeps you on your toes with health management, strategic checkpoints, and a soul currency system for upgrades.
Death's Door received widespread acclaim, with reviewers praising its aesthetics reminiscent of Dark Souls but with a lighter tone. The game's mechanics, simplicity, and engaging combat drew comparisons to legendary titles like The Legend of Zelda. The game features a unique blend of humor, quirks, and attention to detail.
With 10-15 hours to finish the story, the game is not overstaying its welcome, and the gameplay loop is only dragging a little bit towards the end, increasing the difficulty by just spamming more and stronger enemies.
The biggest criticism (that I often have) is the occasional frame drops on the Switch that are really annoying in a game that relies on quick reactions and where mistakes are instantly punished. It was still an enjoyable experience that I can recommend to all fans of this genre!
