Just recently, I added the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Material Ultimania to my collection! After picking up the regular version, I finally grabbed the Material Ultimania, which was released in Japan in December 2024. I waited a bit to avoid high shipping costs and ended up placing a spontaneous, large CDJapan order with this book and some soundtracks I was missing.
If you're familiar with the Material Ultimania volumes for the FFVII Remake, this one is similar but is obviously focused on the second game in the trilogy. It includes concept art for characters, locations, enemies, gadgets, and more. You'll also find CG art, storyboards, and other materials created during development. The cover is an original illustration by Tetsuya Nomura.
This edition has 208 pages and goes far beyond just art. It dives deep into the game’s lore, characters, gameplay mechanics, and development process. Packed with insights from the dev team, it offers a closer look at how Rebirth came together, even if you don’t read Japanese. The visuals alone make it worth importing.
Including shipping and taxes, I paid around €30, which, as always, feels like a solid deal considering the quality and content.
Since the FFVII Remake’s Material Ultimania Plus just got an English release, I doubt we’ll see one for Rebirth anytime soon. Maybe once the trilogy is finished. 😂
Do you collect Ultimania books?
Are you waiting for the English version?
P.S. I decided to give Lightning a day off today, and I’m sure the two substitutes fit the theme just fine. 😉
